The Rapport Approach
Close to 60 years stands between the American Civil Rights Movement and the students that fill classrooms across the country today. The generational gap creates a sense that students are merely observers, in spite of the fact that these same social justice issues continue to be pertinent today. It was Rapport’s goal to create a comprehensive curriculum that will bridge that gap and familiarize students with the content, prior viewing the show. Each lesson is dedicated to close examination of one decade, from the 1960’s to the present and uses aspects of popular youth culture as an access point to the content. Students are invited to produce work that will be showcased as a part of a living installation, firmly embedding their artistic responses in the experience. Through Professional Development workshops led by members of the Rapport team, educators are given the direction they need to successfully integrate the Soundtrack ‘63 materials into their classrooms.
